The Southern-Wine-Mosel
Kormoran near Nittel
Schengen with vinyard Henri Ruppert
Landscape
The region is well known for its vineyards. But also shell limestone formations shape the hills between Remich and Grevenmacher. You can land your boat at the city-landing spaces (with restriction) or at the harbours Schwebsange and Konz with the known comfort. Remich and Grevenmacher are the centres of the region. But also the small villages Schengen, Bech-Kleinmacher (Wellenstein) or Wormeldange are worth a visit.
A cruise through European history
Already the Romans have grown vine on the river Mosel. Visit the reconstructed Roman Villa in Borg, next to Perl. The manor, the gatehouse and the villa baths can be seen. The produced goods from the garden can be tasted in the tavern.
Walk along the old Roman ways. The hiking route Via Caliga starts behind Nenning on the German site of the Mosel. The medieval town Grevenmacher, the Lorrain castle in Sierck-les-Bains and the castles like Schloss Thorn show the vibrant history of the region. Also Europe, as we know it today, has begun in Schengen, where the “Schengen Agreement” was signed in 1985.

Vinebars, vineyards and wine cellars
The cooperative wine cellars Les domains de Vinsmoselle on the Luxembourg site of the Mosel offers their wines and Crémants in shops along the river. Wine cellars like Caves Bernard-Massard and Caves St. Martin open their doors to visitors and show them the production of sparkling wine and wine. You can taste the wine Elbling in the German wine village Nittel, but also Auxerrois and Riesling are often on the menu. Above the village Wormeldange is probably the most expensive vineyard, the “Koeppchen”. Follow the trail to the top of the hill, where you will have a spectacular view over the village and the Mosel.
Tours for active skippers
The Mosel is not only enjoyable via houseboat. There is a well developed cycle track along the river. Hiking trails will bring you to the highlights of the region. Climb along the shell limestone formation at Nittel or visit the oldest town in Luxembourg, Echternach on the river Sauer which flows into the Mosel near Wasserbillig. The river Sauer is the border to Germany.
Saarburg
Stages Konz and Saarburg
You can reach Trier by Konz via train in only 10 minutes or turn right and up the river Saar till Saarburg. Pass by the Ayler Kupp, a well known vineyard on the Saar. Next to wine has Saarburg a second highlight: a waterfall in the middle of the town.
No matter whether you are planning a short trip over the weekend till Remich or a whole week till Konz/Trier or Saarburg - the region has plenty to offer for everyone. But please note that if you are leaving the French waterways, a boating licence is required, if one is needed in your home country (home country regulation).
