The famous poet Fontane has travelled along the Lower Havel and wrote about the region in his novels and travelbooks. The described nature can still be found.
Lower Havel - licence free
You can cruise along the river Havel till Quitzöbel where the Havel flows into the river Elbe. Pure nature will cover your way till Rathenow. Here you can visit museums and find mooring facilities near the centre. Near Rathenow on the Hohennauener waterway are lakes and even a golf course. Also two of the best restaurants in this region are located here.
Elbe-Havel-Canal
Right after the Lower-Havel-Canal at the Plauer See you will cruise along the Elbe-Havel-Canal till the midland canal (licence required). Pass by a castle and the town of Genthin, famous for the production of washing powder till the lock in Hohenwarthe. Cruise over a bridge which leads over the Elbe (see picture) and take the lock at Rothensee and then you will be on the river Elbe. You can cruise with the stream till Havelberg or till Dömitz where the Müritz-Elbe-Waterway will leads you to Schwerin.
