Lake Schweriner See and Müritz-Elde-Waterway

Schwerin
Our base is located in the centre of Schwerin

Landscape
The waterways that can be explored from our base in Schwerin are characterized by bright colours: yellow rape fields, green grasslands and woods and red brick buildings. Not to forget: The blue line of the Müritz-Elde-Waterway starting at its estuary into the river Elbe at Dömitz and ending in Buchholz at some tailing waterways south of the Müritz. At times this waterway runs as a canal and sometimes it curls itself on the way from the Great Lakes to the Elbe and uses the old river bed of the river Elde.

Lake Schweriner See and Stör Canal

Our base in Schwerin is located in the centre of Schwerin. Schwerin offers great places for a shore leave with its many little streets and cosy alleys. But Lake Schwerin also offers some quiet spots. On the northern part of this lake (Schweriner Außensee) you will find plenty of space to try some manoeuvre with your boat. Via the straight Stör Canal south of Lake Schwerin it is a short trip to the Elde-Triangle, passing a large nature protection area. Here you will have two possibilities – straight ahead towards the Mecklenburg Lake District or South into the direction of the river Elbe.

From the Elde-Triangle to the Müritz
Eastwards the narrow Müritz-Elde-Waterway curls itself in meanders until it reaches the Great Lakes at Plau. Here you find small and calm berthing facilities, silent and cosy villages looking forward to your visit. The friendly town Lübz with its own brewery is located close to the waterway. For 20 kilometres fields and forests dominate the waterside. Plau is worth a longer stop: good accommodation facilities and the romantic town invite you to walk in the streets and have a look in the shop windows. Behind Plau you will no longer find any locks, but lovely lakes – more information here.

From Schwerin to Dömitz

Down to the village of Grabow the Müritz-Elde-Waterway leads through a landscape conservation area called Lewitz. The territory following is the so-called “Griese Gegend”, meaning morrlands, tiny watercourses and quiescent pinewoods. The trip on the Müritz-Elde-Waterway towards Dömitz offers numerous villages and towns with different sights. You will have forts and fortifications, half-timbered gables and eaves houses, drawbridges and water mills and not least the castle of Ludwigslust, worthwhile to go to. You can expect good berthing facilities and many marinas. Anyone who is interested in flora and fauna will find the white stork and many other animals. The last part of the Müritz-Elde-Waterway is part of the area Elbtal (Elb-valley) and leads through a large wetland down to the town of Dömitz.
